The Department of Ophthalmology AFPMC-VLGH offers a four-year residency training program in compliance with the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology’s standards. This program aims to develop highly skilled ophthalmologists equipped with both clinical and surgical expertise, enabling them to practice in local and global settings. Beyond technical proficiency, the training fosters a commitment to continuous professional growth, ethical practice, and research-driven contributions to the field. With a dedicated team of ten active consultants and eight visiting board-certified consultants, trainees benefit from specialized guidance in multiple subspecialties.

As part of its mission to provide modernized ophthalmological care, the department serves military personnel, their dependents, and authorized civilians. The department averages 25-30 outpatient consultations daily and conducts free consultations and surgeries for indigent patients during August Sight-Saving Month. Additionally, it actively engages in troop education programs, subspecialty lecture series, and collaborative research efforts. To maintain excellence, the department has acquired cutting-edge diagnostic and laser equipment and established new facilities, including an outpatient eye clinic, a diagnostic and laser eye center, and an ER-OR complex.

What sets this program apart is its military-style discipline and structured approach to training. Residents are trained in trauma management, mass casualty handling, and combat casualty care, preparing them for deployment in various regions. The program also offers structured career pathways, educational benefits, stipends, and opportunities to serve in diverse roles within the military healthcare system. For aspiring applicants, this is a chance to practice ophthalmology while serving the country—combining excellence in eye care with a commitment to support the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
