Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) is a government operated medical facility located at the heart of Cebu City. The Department of Ophthalmology offers a 3-year residency training program that aims to produce service driven graduates with distinctive clinical and surgical competence that brings them at par with colleagues in the country and elsewhere in the globe.

As trainees at a tertiary hospital, residents encounter a diverse range of cases at the eye center and receive numerous in-patient and emergency room referrals from various departments, further enhancing their experience. As the VSMMC Department of Ophthalmology’s roster of consultants continues to grow, the residents are well supervised by board certified consultants as they navigate through thousands of consults and surgical procedures during their training. Residents work together with the different subspecialty consultants in the management of disorders of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, glaucoma, vitreo-retina, orbit, lacrimal, oculoplastics, uveitis, corneal and external disease, and neuro-ophthalmology. With an eye center supported by the DOH-Health Facility Development Bureau, diagnostic and therapeutic services such as optical coherence tomography, visual field perimetry, A and B scan biometry, fundus camera, fluorescein angiography, YAG and retinal laser procedures are readily available.

In pursuit of our vision, the department looks forward to developing and training physicians for the practice of Ophthalmology to serve the population of Region VII and elsewhere in the country.
