The University of Santo Tomas Hospital Department of Ophthalmology is a leading residency program built on a legacy of excellence, service, and faith. Rooted in the core values of Competence, Commitment, and most notably, Compassion, we take pride in training not only highly capable ophthalmologists, but deeply humanistic Thomasian doctors. Our 58 board-certified faculty (27 active and 31 visiting consultants) guide residents through a holistic education grounded in ethics, service, and lifelong learning.

Our three-year program offers structured rotations across all major ophthalmic subspecialties, including Cornea, Retina, Glaucoma, Cataract, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Refractive Surgery, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Uveitis, Oculoplastics, and more. Training is conducted throughout the hospital—including the Eye Institute and Ambulatory Care Services, where residents manage an average of 50–60 patients daily. Surgical experience begins in the first year, with cataract surgery introduced as early as the second year. Facilities include three dedicated ophthalmic OR suites equipped with modern phacoemulsification machines and advanced diagnostic tools.

Residents are encouraged to pursue research, with support from faculty across subspecialties. Community engagement is integral to our mission, with regular participation in UST Medical Missions Inc. and our biannual in-house surgical missions to serve those in need.
