The Department of Ophthalmology at Rizal Medical Center (RMC) in Pasig City offers a comprehensive, three-year residency program accredited by the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology (PBO). This program is dedicated to developing competent, compassionate, and ethical ophthalmologists through rigorous clinical training, academic instruction, and research involvement.
Residents rotate through various ophthalmologic subspecialties, including Cataract, Glaucoma, Retina & Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, Neuro-Ophthalmology, External Disease & Cornea, Uveitis & Ocular Inflammation, Oculoplastics, Lacrimal, Orbit & Reconstructive Surgery, Ocular Pathology, and Ocular Oncology. Each rotation is enriched with weekly case discussions, subspecialty conferences, and formative assessments, all under the mentorship of 30 PBO-certified consultants.
Designated by the Department of Health as an Advanced Comprehensive Specialty Center, the department is housed within the Eye Training and Facilities Center (ETFC), which is equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical equipment, including 3 dedicated ambulatory ophthalmic operating rooms. This facility allows residents to gain extensive hands-on experience, with each resident performing at least 800 surgeries annually.
In addition to clinical training, the program places strong emphasis on research and community service. Residents are required to undertake research projects and present their findings at local or international conferences. They also actively participate in outreach initiatives such as the surgical mission in the Bicol region, providing much-needed eye care to underserved populations.
Graduates of the program are fully equipped to pursue further subspecialty training or to practice as general ophthalmologists in diverse healthcare settings. With its steadfast commitment to academic excellence, patient-centered care, and community outreach, the department stands as a premier choice for ophthalmology residency training in the Philippines.
Our hope is that the bright legacy begun by the forefathers of Rizal Medical Center will continue to shine—through the generations of excellent, compassionate, and ethical ophthalmologists who carry the heart to serve, wherever they may be.
