The Region I Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology and Eye Center offers an accredited 3-year program guided by board-certified consultants. Promotion is based on a satisfactory performance supported by academic excellence and clinical skills, guided by the PBO-recommended curriculum. The department provides clinics in general ophthalmology and subspecialty services: Oculoplastics & Orbit, Cataract, External Disease & Cornea, Glaucoma, Retina, Neuro-ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, Uveitis, Optics, Contact Lens and Refractive surgery

The Eye Center is located at the Third Floor of the R1MC Outpatient Department (OPD) Building, where it houses the following: Outpatient Clinic (General and Subspecialty Clinics), Refraction Clinic, Patients’ Waiting Area, Eye Instrument Center/ Ancillary Procedure and Laser Room, Ambulatory Operating Rooms (2 Major and 1 Minor), Changing Area, Pre-operative Area, Post Anesthesia Care Unit Area, Staff Lounge, Chairman’s Office, Residents’ Quarters, Nurses Station and Storage Room.

The department caters to an average of 100 patients per day from Pangasinan and its neighboring provinces (e.g. La Union, Nueva Ecija, Ilocos Sur, CAR provinces and Baguio city).

The residency training program aims to produce Ophthalmologists proficient in clinical acumen, surgical judgment, technical skills, and professional ethics. Ultimately, the residents-in-training are prepared for the PBO diplomacy examination and are encouraged to go further into subspecialty training. All leading to the provision of quality eye healthcare to the Filipino people.

Ophthalmology residency programs are predominantly concentrated at the National Capital Region. As one of the provincial institutions, our department serves a diverse patient population, presenting our trainees with a multitude of cases. This contributes to their clinical experience and is also an immense opportunity for research breakthroughs.

Overall, the training program aims to produce holistic, adept and well-rounded ophthalmologists who are passionate for learning and service.
