The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) offers a full-time residency training program and fellowship training programs in seven subspecialties; namely, external disease and cornea, vitreo-retina, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, orbit and oculoplasty, uveitis, and pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.
The Department is housed in Sentro Oftalmologico Jose Rizal, a self-sustaining, world-class eye center with its own operating room complex, eye instrument center, service (charity) ward, pay unit, and audiovisual auditorium.
The strength of the department lies in consultant supervision of trainees and the large and varied number of patient cases trainees get exposed to. Residents an fellows are closely supervised by consultants in both consultations and surgeries. Under the guidance of the consultants, the trainees see over 50,000 patients and perform over 4,000 surgical procedures per year. Being part of a tertiary hospital, trainees also see a wide variety of cases and receive various referrals for co- management from the numerous departments of the hospital further increasing their exposure. The Department was awarded its three-year accreditation by the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology during the latest visit by the Board in 2024.
The Department continues to stand by its commitment to develop leadership and integrity among eye care physicians in the UP Tradition of academic excellence and social responsiveness through advancing knowledge and skills, sustaining quality eye care services, and promoting relevant research.
