The Northern Mindanao Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology started as a base hospital of the UP-PGH Modified Resident Training Program (MRTP). With the increase in number of local applicants, the Ophthalmology department was established. The Department has currently 12 active and 3 visiting consultants of various subspecialties.
As the only accredited ophthalmology residency training program in Northern Mindanao, we cater to all patients from Region 10 and its neighboring provinces, allowing our residents exposure to the full spectrum of ophthalmologic diseases, including several rare cases. Our usual daily OPD census is 100-120 patients/day, and our surgical census at 20 cases/week, with cataract surgeries at 300/year. Our General Ophthalmology Clinics open daily at 6am as part of the Department of Health’s Bagong Urgent Care and Ambulatory Service (BUCAS) program, and ends until 10pm. Subspecialty Clinics start in the afternoon, manned by both the subspecialty consultant/s and rotating residents. The Eye Center offers complete diagnostic examinations and therapeutic options offering the convenience of a “one-stop-shop” set-up for patients. Our residents have also presented their researches to local and international conventions.
With established partnerships with various organizations and satellite hospitals, the department is able to tap their help in delivering public health services through medical missions and lay fora activities.
Hope you can join our growing family as we continue to establish a quality training program that can produce competent, compassionate, and ethical ophthalmologists that can cater to most, if not all ophthalmic needs; an ophthalmologist that not only looks at his private career but also attends to his/her social responsibilities beyond the practice of Ophthalmology.
