The Manila Central University – Filemon D. Tanchoco Medical Foundation (MCU-FDTMF) Department of Ophthalmology, established in 1954, proudly holds the distinction of being the first in the Philippines to function independently from the Department of Eyes, Ear, Nose, and Throat (EENT). It offers a three- year ophthalmology residency training program aimed at developing competent and compassionate ophthalmologists equipped with essential clinical, surgical, teaching, and research capabilities.
Guided by its vision “to become a leading eye institution in Metro Manila North, recognized for excellence in patient-centered eye care, advanced training, and innovative research,” the Department strives to deliver exceptional service and training. Its mission is “to preserve and restore vision by providing high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-based ophthalmic care.” The Department is dedicated to educating future eye specialists through rigorous academic instruction and practical experience, ensuring excellent clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. It further promotes blindness prevention and eye health through research and community outreach.
The Department is composed of 30 board-certified ophthalmologists, including 10 active consultants known for their supportive and collegial demeanor. It is based in a tertiary-level, teaching-training hospital located along EDSA, providing a wide range of ophthalmic services across nearly all subspecialties. The Vision and Eye Wellness (ViEW) Center serves as the hospital’s dedicated eye care facility, equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools and a specialized ophthalmology library.
Residents participate in structured training activities including conferences, workshops, and teaching rounds. They begin research early in their residency and are involved in administrative tasks and medical student education to develop leadership and teaching skills. Each resident is assigned a mentor for personalized guidance. MCU remains the only institution in the country offering both ophthalmology and optometry training. One resident per level is accepted annually. The Department welcomes passionate and driven individuals to join its growing academic community.
