The Makati Medical Center Ophthalmology Residency Training Program has in recent years become one of the most sought-after training programs in the country. Established in 1983, the program has been continuously accredited by the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology ever since. With a legacy of over 60 graduates, it has produced highly competent ophthalmologists and leaders in the profession, many of whom have made significant contributions to clinical care, academia, research, and healthcare policy—both locally and internationally.

This three-year program is intentionally selective, accepting only two residents per year to maximize learning opportunities and ensure close personal mentorship. This structure fosters individualized training, broad clinical exposure, and extensive hands-on experience, all designed to support each resident’s professional and personal growth. The program’s training philosophy is firmly rooted in the core values of compassion, integrity, competence, and teamwork.

Residents are immersed in the entire spectrum of ophthalmic practice, supported by a full complement of subspecialists. A distinguishing feature of the program is its dedicated Section of Bioethics—unique among training institutions in the country—which underscores its commitment to fostering professionalism and ethical leadership.

Trainees benefit from state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technology, a fully integrated outpatient department, and a high-volume patient census. Clinical acumen is developed under the close guidance of expert consultants, while surgical proficiency is enhanced through consultant-supervised procedures and regular wet labs designed to safely bridge theory and practice.

The program emphasizes continuous development through regular assessments and structured feedback, contributing to its 100% PBO board passing rate over the past 10 years. Residents are also actively engaged in research, consistently producing award- winning work presented at both local and international conferences.

More than just a training program, the department offers a supportive, close-knit community, where ethical grounding, clinical excellence, and strong mentorship come together to prepare residents to become outstanding ophthalmologists and future leaders of the field.
