The Department of Ophthalmology at the East Avenue Medical Center holds one of the most sought-after training programs as it has evolved through the years in terms of leadership and competency, as well as receiving consistent accreditations by the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology with a 100% board-passing rate for many years. As of 2024, 42 consultants contribute to the teaching and mentorship of our residents. In 2009, the department was re- dedicated to the public as the “Department of Health Eye Center” (DOHEC), as the National Eye Referral Center, moving on to be designated as the National Specialty Center for Eye Care in 2021

Our vision is to be the most trusted source of eye health care and ophthalmic education in the Philippines. We provide excellent training in the art and science of ophthalmology producing research-oriented, ethically grounded and clinically competent ophthalmologists.

We utilize and maintain state of the art equipment for our 10 subspecialty services, with a recently added Ocular Trauma service. With more than 45,000 consultations and 5,000 surgeries annually, the training program of the DOH Eye Center prepares trainees to deliver the highest standard of care, with opportunities for research on the different subspecialties in Ophthalmology.

Our residents have one outside rotation in American Eye Center for Refractive Surgery. We have built linkages in Culion and Batanes hospitals where we lend our subspecialty services, and Cardinal Santos Medical Center for Ocular Pathology conferences. With our rigorous academic and clinical training, we maintain a supportive environment that includes individual mentorship and approachable consultants.

The DOH Eye Center is a ground for infinite opportunities not only to learn, but to serve. We are committed to cultivating competent surgeons who can also be compassionate, well-rounded future leaders in the field of Ophthalmology.
