The Department of Ophthalmology at Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center (Dr. PJGMRMC) is a progressive training institution committed to excellence in patient care and ophthalmology education. Established as a separate section in 2000, it has grown into DOH-recognized Advanced Comprehensive Eye Center. The department is currently led by Dr. Maliwat and supported by over 17 board- certified consultants, including fifteen subspecialists, alongside dedicated hospitalists and a strong resident training team. Our vision is to be the center of choice for excellent eye care and ophthalmology training by 2030, and our mission is to deliver comprehensive, high-quality eye care to patients as well as provide exemplary training to aspiring ophthalmologists by upholding the highest standards of care through commitment to ethical and evidence-based practice guidelines.

The department handles over 12,000 outpatient consults and performs an average of 700 surgeries annually, encompassing cataract, retina, glaucoma, cornea, and other subspecialties. Subspecialty clinics, eye screening missions, and outside rotations enhance clinical training. MOAs with AUF Medical Center and Good Sam Eye and Laser Center further enrich surgical exposure. Facilities are equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical tools, including OCT-Angiography, anterior segment OCT, phacoemulsification units, and laser machines. Research is strongly encouraged, with residents actively producing studies that contribute to policy and practice. What makes the program unique is its commitment to mentorship, outreach, and its consistent 100% board pass rate.
