The Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC)  formerly known as Davao Regional Hospital, is a Department of Health (DOH) Level 3 Teaching- Training Hospital with a 600-bed capacity. In November 2010, Dr. Romulo A. Busuego, the former Chief of Hospital together with Dr. Leopoldo J. Vega, the former Medical Center Chief of the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), entered and executed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two medical centers for the creation of a Residency Training Extension Program in Ophthalmology, as part of the DOH Clustering of Health Services in Region XI. Thus, creating the Ophthalmology Residency Training Program of DRMC. In March 2023, the department became an independent 3-year residency training program and received accreditation from the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology (PBO). At present, we have 11 active consultants and all are Diplomate of the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology.

We shall obtain this recognition by excelling in each of our core areas – patient care, research, and training. Ultimately, we aspire to universally improve health through the alleviation of blinding deseases.

The Davao Regional Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology offers a residency training program designed to teach resident physicians to be proactive in the step-wise learning process of clinical examination, diagnosis and management of ocular diseases and in research activities employing all strategies of learning.

All resident physicians will have the opportunity for clinical exposure to the different subspecialty services and perform the tasks expected per year level. In addition to subspecialty rotations, resident physicians will be rostered to 24-hour shifts in the emergency room, weekday out-patient clinic, operating room theatre as well as providing valuable educational resources to junior staff working within the department.

Likewise, clinical work will extend to approved hospital activities including but not limited to medical and surgical eye missions. A graduate of the training program should have complied with the required case presentations, research paper and at least a satisfactory evaluation with utmost professionalism and ethical values consistent with the Department of Health, Philippine Board of Ophthalmology and global standards and guidelines.
