The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC) was established in 1988. Throughout the years, the department has focused on academic excellence, high-quality patient care and providing charitable eye care in underserved areas.

UERMMMC has always emphasized the importance of higher learning. The department encourages its graduates to gain advanced training in various fields of ophthalmology, leading to the  development of its diverse sub-specialty sections. Coupled with continuous additions of technological advancements, this has led to an enhanced ability to deliver exceptional specialized care to its patients. The establishment of the UERM Eye Center in 2018, and the Eye Surgery Unit in 2024, allows UERMMMC to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for a wide variety of ophthalmologic diseases.

Presently, the department remains at the forefront of ophthalmologic care and education in the Philippines, with a strong focus on research, innovation, and producing highly academic ophthalmologists. The department features no less than 18 internationally published authors, with regular placements at the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology annual research paper contests.
